Dodd Wood, St Bega's Church & Mirehouse

A short, scenic circular walk of approximately 4.5 km (2.7 miles), taking around 1.5–2 hours at a relaxed pace. The route is almost flat, with around 150 m (490 ft) of total ascent, making it ideal for a gentle winter walk.

We’ll walk along the edge of Dodd Wood, cross open fields often grazed by sheep, and enjoy seasonal views of snowdrops, the surrounding fells, and Bassenthwaite Lake. The route includes a visit to St Bega’s Church, a historic Saxon church, with the welcome opportunity to stop and enjoy some cake along the way.

The walk starts and finishes at Dodd Wood Car Park (card payment only). Terrain is a mix of woodland paths and grassy fields. Please note that only the final section of the route — between the church and the finish point — is suitable for an all-terrain pushchair or mobility scooter. Anyone who needs this option is very welcome to walk directly to the church to meet the group for cake, then return together (approximately 2.5 km / 1.5 miles).

Please wear waterproof walking boots or wellies and a suitable coat for winter conditions, and bring your own drink. Cake will be provided.

Children and well-behaved dogs are very welcome.
